URBANA, ILL. -- University of Illinois interim President Stanley Ikenberry says the school will probably raise tuition for incoming freshmen by at least 9 percent this summer.

Illinois and other state universities are scrambling to cover costs as they wait for millions of dollars being withheld by the state as it struggles with a growing deficit. Illinois alone is owed more than $400 million.

Smaller increases happen every year.

Tuition was raised last summer for incoming freshmen by 2.6 percent

University board of trustees Chairman Christopher Kennedy said Thursday that he is worried the university could become too expensive for some students who can now afford to attend.

Ikenberry also expects to get a preliminary report on potential cost-cutting measures in May.
