DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa officials are awaiting word on whether the state will receive federal economic stimulus money to develop a high-speed rail system that would link eastern Iowa with Chicago.
Officials are seeking $256 million in federal grant money to establish service between Iowa City and Chicago via Davenport. Another passenger railroad route, seeking a $139 million federal grant, would operate between Chicago and Dubuque.
An announcement on funding for high-speed rail corridors is expected on Thursday.
Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba and Iowa Department of Transportation spokeswoman Dena Gray-Fisher say they are optimistic the Chicago to Iowa City route will receive federal funds.
