DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- An Iowa legislator is proposing traffic cameras be placed in work zones on interstate and primary highways in the state.
Democratic Rep. Wesley Whitead of Sioux City says the sole purpose of placing cameras in work zones would be to slow traffic. He pointed out that motorists exceeding the posted speed in road construction zones endanger the lives of workers and vehicle operators.
A House subcommittee began work Wednesday on Whitead's proposal.
The bill would require the placement of speed-enforcement cameras with Doppler radar units. They would photograph and record vehicle descriptions, registration plates and rates of speeds along with the times, dates and locations.
Ross Loder of the Department of Public Safety says the agency would oppose the bill as currently drafted because it would cost about $10 million to buy and place equipment.
