WEBSTER CITY, IOWA (AP) -- Gov. Chet Culver says he is willing to work with local school districts to make up missed days due to recent snow and ice storms.
Some districts like the Des Moines Public Schools have already missed seven days of classes due to storms.
Culver said Thursday in Webster City that he is open to the idea of extending the school day or other schedule changes.
Schools have several options for making up the missed days, including adding 30 minutes to the school day, holding school on in-service days, on Saturdays or during spring break. Schools can also ask the legislature for an exemption or waiver of the requirement that they hold classes for 180 days. Culver, though, said he does not approve of such exemptions.
