JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri is planning to install median guard cables along U.S. 63 from Jefferson City to Columbia.

The state will spend $2.3 million in the spring for a Columbia-based company to place the cable along 25 miles of U.S. 63. The Department of Transportation says more than 24,000 vehicles travel the route daily between the two cities.

A study of guard cables along Interstate 70 showed there is a 98 percent chance they will stop a car from entering opposing lanes of traffic.

Missouri has more than 600 miles of guard cable on its highways, including along Interstates 70, 44 and 29.
