Stricter guidelines on how to dispose of from Iowa D.N.R
FT. MADISON, IA. -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has made stricter rules on how household hazardous waste can be disposed of.
That's why the Great River Regional Waste Authority in Fort Madison now allows residents to drop off their hazardous waste.
The drop off is limited to people in the service area of the waste authority, which includes Lee County, Van Buren County and rural Henry County.
Residents of those areas can drop off all kinds of household hazardous waste such as herbicides, oil based paints, motor oil and aerosol cans.
"We don't want it to go in landfills anymore, period, because of the groundwater. And if it contaminates the ground water it gets into what we drink on a daily basis. So there's pretty stringent rules against it," said GRRWA General Manager, Wade Hamm.
Residents must call Great River Regional Waste Authority to make an appointment to drop off their household hazardous waste.
The drop off program began February 1st, since then there have only been six appointments made.
Hamm says once people find out the program is available, he expects more people to use it.
