CHICAGO, ILL. (AP) -- With Valentine's Day coming up February 14, the American Academy of Pediatrics is listing 14 ways to show children love.

Here are some of them:

  • Use plenty of positive words and avoid sarcasm.
  • Respond promptly to children's needs and banish put-downs.
  • Offer hugs or other affection when children are angry or in a bad mood.
  • Spend time alone with your children doing things they enjoy.
  • Plan family nights where everyone can be together.
  • Praise accomplishments to help build their self-esteem.
  • And, last, but not least, the nation's largest pediatricians group says don't forget to say "I love you" to kids of all ages.
