Man cons his way into area homes

QUINCY, ILL. -- A warning tonight for residents in both Hannibal and Quincy and the entire Tri State area.

There have been reports in both towns Tuesday afternoon of a man who knocks on your door and says he is with the the local water department and says there is a problem with your water service.

The residents goes with the man downstairs to the basement and while he's allegedly inspecting the water service, several other people enter the house and steal whatever is in sight.

So if you have a knock at your door from a man claiming there is a problem with your utilities or with something outside your house, ask for proper identification and immediately call 9-1-1.

Police also ask you to try and get a description of the man and also a description possibly of the car he might be driving.

A couple of weeks ago, there were at least two similar cases in Quincy where people were robbed in the same type of situation.

Those suspects have never been caught.

The following is a press release from the Quincy Police Department:

The Quincy Police Department is currently investigating three Burglary to Residence reports.

In all three cases, a male came to the door, made contact with the resident, and asked to enter the residence for some type of repair.

Upon entry into the residence, the subject was accompanied by the home owner.

Meanwhile, an accomplice entered the residences and took possessions belonging to the home owners.

In two of the cases the suspect is described as a male 5’7”, in the third suspect is a shorter male.  

Place of Occurrence:1500 Block Chestnut, 800 Block N. 36th, Vermont St. East of 20th.
