City improvement plans draw resident concerns
KEOKUK, IA. -- One of the projects on tap for the city of Keokuk is sprucing up Grand Avenue.
The city wants to make improvements to the 11 block stretch of Grand Avenue from fourth street to Rand Park. The city wants to narrow the streets width.
They also want to install new water and sanitary and storm sewer lines. The area will get new sidewalks, curbs, fire hydrants, even lighting. But the change isn't sitting well with some area residents. They're concerned that the change will take away the neighborhood's landscaping and beauty.
Mayor Tom Marion says residents don't have to worry about that.
"What we've done, we're going to leave the trees exactly where they are with an extension of two feet on each side. We're gong to lose three trees. We're trying to maintain the character, but it will still be a beautiful vista, a boulevard. We'll still have an expanded green area, so it's not going to take away from the character," said Mayor Marion.
The projects is expected to cost about $3.4 million dollars. Mayor Marion hopes to start the project this spring.
