DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Whirlpool Corp. has announced plans to move some production capacity from a plant in Indiana to its Amana refrigerator plant in Iowa.
Whirlpool officials say the shift of ice maker production to the plant in Amana later this year is expected to create 60 jobs. The Benton Harbor, Mich.-based company has also revealed plans to invest $20 million in the plant to upgrade equipment, improve energy efficiency and improve production.
The Iowa Economic Development Board on Thursday awarded Whirlpool a $6.5 million forgivable loan. State records indicate Whirlpool also seeks a $500,000 grant from the Iowa Office of Energy Independence for the project.
The company said upgrading equipment would help retain 1,600 jobs at the plant.
The Amana plant is the only Iowa operation Whirlpool retained after buying and closing Maytag Corp. in 2006.
