ST. LOUIS, MO. (AP) -- The plan for a new Mississippi River bridge between Illinois and Missouri at St. Louis is taking its biggest step forward with the official start of construction.

Federal politicians will join local officials Friday in breaking ground for the four-lane span expected to cost $670 million and ease congestion at one of the nation's busiest crossings.

The project had been stalled for years because of bickering between the two states over costs and whether the bridge should charge tolls.

The bridge is expected to be completed by the middle part of this decade.

Friday's event on the Eads Bridge is open to the public.
