Turn to drugs and alcohol to cope
QUINCY, ILL. -- Many times, teenagers turn to substances like drugs and alcohol because they feel depressed.
We found out depression is on the rise in teenagers. We spoke to Allen Obert with Transitions. He tells KHQA more kids struggle with depression because of changes in society.
Obert says we live in a very fast paced society where things are thrown at kids at a younger age quickly. He says many times, teenagers want instant gratification.
"Often kids who are feeling depressed want just to feel better and they're looking for something that's gonna make them feel better quickly, and sometimes they'll turn to substances as a result of that."said Obert.
Some signs of depression in teenagers include anger and hostility and changes in normal activities. Obert says to help kids fight depression encourage your kids to get involved in pro-social activities.
It also helps if kids know they have a support system. You can find more information on signs of depression and how to treat it at these following links: www.twi.org
