BURLINGTON, IOWA (AP) -- An off-duty West Burlington police officer visiting a local bar in January spotted an alleged drug deal that has led to the arrest of a local man.

Des Moines County prosecutors on Monday charged 49-year-old Gary Alan Russell with one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Officer Angela Bonor says she was off-duty when she observed a suspected drug deal inside a bar and called other officers. She says the man, later identified as Russell, entered the bar, approached another man, opened his pants zipper and retrieved a packet, which he handed the man. The off-duty officer reportedly saw the other man hand cash to Russell.

Court papers indicate Russell, when confronted, agreed to let officers search him. The search allegedly turned up several small bags of cocaine and $1,000 in cash.
