Board considers cuts to extracurricular staff

QUINCY, ILL. -- Due to state budget cuts, you'll recall school districts like Quincy have to make another two million dollars in cuts.

That adds up to a total budget reduction of three point eight million dollars so far for the next school year.

Wednesday afternoon School Board members held a public hearing to hear from folks concerned about possible cuts to reduce certain extracurricular assignments of tenured and non-tenured employees.

Twenty-five assistant coaching positions are on the chopping block.  Find the complete list below. Other positions affected include six collaborative teacher training Academy staff and a Junior High Department Chair.

Several teachers and even a student spoke out against some of the proposed cuts.

Student and Tennis Player Zach Carlson said, "Without out coach we wouldn't be a team.  We come together and we leave as brothers."

Superintendent Lonny Lemon says the board is trying to save money, while keeping as many opportunities open to students as possible.  He emphasizes that although cuts to extracurriculars may impact stipends of tenured staff, no tenured staff will lose their teaching positions.

After the public hearing, the board went into a closed session to discuss the cuts.

The school board will meet again March 24th.  That's the night board members should announce the final cuts to the budget.
