JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri's leading Senate candidates are joining the call to curb congressional earmarks.
House Republicans pledged Thursday not to insert any earmarks for local projects in this year's spending bills. House Democrats a day earlier said they would no longer earmark spending to for-profit companies.
Republican Congressman Roy Blunt, who is running for Senate, has used earmarks in the past. But Blunt said Thursday he will sponsor an amendment cutting about $30 billion from the budget -- the same amount dedicated for local projects last year by Congress.
Secretary of State Robin Carnahan is the top Democratic Senate candidate. A spokesman said last year that Carnahan supported dedicated spending only if discussed openly. Carnahan said Thursday she wants to ban all earmarks.
