QUINCY, ILL. -- Some area college students are using time off to give back.
Some Quincy University students are using their spring break this week to volunteer at the New Start Rescue Mission in Quincy. It's an organization that gives a helping hand, a place to stay and employment to adult men down on their luck. They're sorting clothing donations and other materials to make room for renovations in an area of the second floor.
It's all part of QU's 50 States Service Project, in which university students, staff and alumni will perform service work in all fifty states to celebrate the school's 150th anniversary.
Students and folks here are New Start say it's a win-win for all involved.
Eric Steitz, QU Student said, "When you go on a mission trip like this, you really can't fully understand all the things you'll get out of it until you go. It might be just understanding that people are in need. Or you might find that for a lot of people on the trip, it's their first time doing service so hopefully, it will make them want to do more service."
Bill Hahn, Director of the New Start Rescue Mission said, "The community as a whole wants to get involved and it's especially nice to see Quincy University students get involved. Anytime you see someone else giving it's bound to help out and give you the heart for service as well."
You'll recall the New Start Mission began in 2007 by Chuck Smith.
He passed away suddenly last year, but the Mission is still in operation thanks to local donations and volunteers.
