GALESBURG, ILL. (AP) -- Galesburg has joined the gaggle of towns around the country trying to convince Google that they're perfect choice for a new high-speed Internet network.
Google announced earlier this year that it will build several experimental networks around the country.
Galesburg officially asked the California search engine company on Monday to pick it.
Mayor Sal Garza told people gathered at a pep rally that a high-speed network would help the west-central Illinois town's economy diversify beyond its dependence on railroads.
Peoria announced its own Google ambitions last month.
Scores of towns around the country have done the same.
Garza asked people to visit www.googleingalesburg.com to help the city with its nomination.
