QUINCY, ILL. -- The Quincy Community Garden is starting its fifth season this spring. The program has been a big success, and has expanded each year. Reservations are being taken for those who would like to have a garden plot in one of the three sites in Quincy. Plots vary in size from about 300 square feet to 75 square feet. There is no charge to have a plot for the 2010 season. Residents agree to plant and maintain their plot from April through October, keep down weeds, and clear their space at the end of the season. To reserve a spot, call the University of Illinois Extension office at (217) 223-8380.
The original Community Garden site is located near 8th and Elm Streets, near the Jackson Lincoln pool. A second space was opened near this area last summer. The third location is on Quincy University property near 20th and Elm, behind the tennis building. These areas are filling quickly. If you are interested in having a plot, it is wise to get your name on the list soon.
There will be a 2010 introductory meeting for the garden sites at 8th and Elm on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at the Redmon and Lee Community Center, 814 Elm. A meeting for those interested in having a plot at QU is Thursday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. If you would like to have a site in one of those areas, be sure to attend.
The Quincy Community Garden project is coordinated by the University of Illinois Extension, Adams County in conjunction with the City of Quincy, Quincy Park District, Quincy University and Adams/Brown County Master Gardeners.
