JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- More than 60 Missouri schools canceled classes this academic year because of swine flu outbreaks. Now, legislation pending in a Senate committee would excuse them from making up the lost days.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Wes Shoemyer, a Democrat from Clarence.
Shoemyer told the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday the bill would prevent schools from having to change their graduation dates. State law requires a minimum of 174 school days per academic year.
The measure authorizes the education commissioner to grant waivers to schools that closed because of H1N1 flu.
The state health department says that 63 schools closed because of swine flu, mostly in October in southern Missouri.
