CHICAGO, ILL. (AP) -- Planning is under way in Illinois for Earth Hour, a campaign to highlight the threat of climate change.

On March 27, buildings will go dark from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. as nonessential lights are turned off.

In Springfield, the State Capitol Dome and the Governor's Mansion will go dark.

In Chicago, Navy Pier, Merchandise Mart and the Wrigley Building will be among the more than 200 buildings turning out exterior lights.

Communities pledging to join include: Algonquin, Bolingbrook, Carol Stream, Deerfield, DeKalb, Evanston, Hoffman Estates, Homer Glen, Lombard, Mount Prospect, Naperville, Oak Lawn, Oak Park, Olympia Fields, Orland Park, Rolling Meadows, Roselle, Schaumburg and South Elgin.

Earth Hour is sponsored globally by the World Wildlife Fund and in Illinois by ComEd.
