SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- Illinois taxpayers have received $15.4 million in tax returns this year through the earned income tax credit.

The number of families eligible increased 16 percent this year.

About 638,000 Illinois families have already received tax credits of $80.8 million this tax year.

State revenue officials urge taxpayers to seek free tax preparation assistance - particularly the 500,000 residents who received unemployment compensation in 2009 or those eligible for the tax credit.

Services are free for families who earned less than $50,000 and individuals make less than $25,000.

Families with two or more children in their home could get up to $4,824 from the federal tax credit - making them eligible for up to $241 in Illinois credits.
