DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Legislative leaders say they've given up on plans to adjourn and instead will try to finish their work Monday.

Lawmakers had hoped to end the session Saturday night, but House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy says they decided that wasn't possible. They didn't want to meet on Palm Sunday, so opted to finish up Monday.

Earlier in the day, the Senate approved a gun permit measure, 44-4. The proposal overhauls Iowa's system for issuing permits to carry concealed weapons, requiring that sheriffs give a reason if they deny a permit and make such decisions based on consistent state guidelines.

The House will take up the gun bill Monday.
