DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa lawmakers will meet again Tuesday after failing to reach a budget deal.
Lawmakers had hoped to end the session Monday and negotiated behind closed doors before adjourning for the day.
They remain divided over details of a new $5.3 billion budget.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy says Democrats are confident they can defend their decision to wipe out a $341 million budget shortfall by cutting spending and not turning to higher taxes.
But Republican House Minority Leader Kraig Paulsen says the spending cuts Democrats are approving will force an increase in local property taxes as high as $200 million.
