QUINCY, ILL. -- You'll recall we've told you that the United State Postal Services is considering dropping its Saturday mail service, going down to 5 days a week.
We talked with a spokesperson from the Postal Service. He told KHQA the potential cuts stem from changes in the way folks communicate these days. The use of e-mail is reducing the pieces of mail through the system.
If the postal service's infrastructure isn't downsized, it could face a $238 billion deficit over the next ten years.
The reduction to delivery five days a week would save three billion dollars every year.
Part of the savings would be in manpower.
In fact a viewer left a comment on our website saying at least twelve workers would lose their jobs in the Quincy area.
The postal service wouldn't comment on numbers, but did say full-time staff should not be affected. Plans are to reduce the workforce by attrition due to retirements.
The reduction of postal deliveries to five days is not finalized yet.
The plan still have to get approval from Congress before its implemented.
