Tracks back open after crews cleared tracks

FT. MADISON, IOWA (AP) -- Railroad tracks near the Mississippi River in Fort Madison were back open Wednesday, March 31st after a mudslide closed them the day before.

The mudslide a few blocks from the Iowa State Penitentiary was discovered Tuesday morning.

The mud from a steep bluff covered about 300 feet of track and was six to ten feet deep.

Crews used cranes and bulldozers to clear the mud

Rail traffic was detoured to Galesburg, Ill.

No injuries were reported.

Another mudslide happened in the same area on March 14, but not as big.
