DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Gov. Chet Culver is praising the Legislature for declining to begin the process of asking voters if they want to amend the constitution to ban gay marriage.

Culver says he thinks Iowans have accepted a 2009 Iowa Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage in the state. He says his personal view remains that marriage should be between a man and a woman but that the court has spoken and it's time to move on.

Culver spoke Wednesday at a news conference, primarily aimed at giving his thoughts on the legislative session that ended Tuesday.

The topic is certain to come up in this fall's race for governor. All three Republicans seeking to face Culver support asking voters whether to amend the Iowa constitution and overturn the court's decision.
