DES MOINES, IA. -- DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The FBI says Iowa Gov. Chet Culver is one of the governors who have received letters from an extremist group demanding their resignations.
State officials are saying little about a letter sent to Iowa Gov. Chet Culver calling for him to leave office. But federal officials say such letters have been sent to more than 30 governors, demanding they leave office within three days or that they will be removed.
On Friday, governor spokesman Troy Price confirmed the Iowa State Patrol had seized the letter after it was found in a state mail room, and it never reached the governor's office. Price wouldn't discuss details about the letter or whether any new security measures had been established.
The FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have advised Culver and the other governors to be on alert.
An aide to the governor confirmed he received one of the letters but would not comment further.
Iowa State Patrol Capt. Curt Henderson says the FBI was investigating the letter and that the state wouldn't release any details about the matter.
They are also asking law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities.
Federal authorities said on Thursday that they were not aware of any imminent threat of violence against the nation's governors.
