MACOMB -- The state of Illinois is working with a horse owner near Macomb after reports of several emaciated horses on his property. Investigators went to the property of Dan Despain on Monday.
Doctor Colleen O'Keefe is with the Food Safety and Animal Protection Division of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. She told KHQA that less than a dozen horses were found stuck in mud.
Those horses were moved to drier land and are being treated by a veterinarian. One horse died, but Doctor O'Keefe says the others are in reasonable shape. She also said the owner is being very cooperative.
In a letter to McDonough County and the State of Illinois...Gillian Stupples a local horse breeder wrote that some of the horses were pregnant and that the horses were kept in a muddy paddock without any shelter.
