SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- Illinois officials are going to miss another deadline for action on a state budget, and thousands of state employees could pay the price.
The Illinois House adjourned without taking action on a new budget Wednesday. That's the day the state comptroller was supposed to start processing paychecks for nearly 5,000 employees.
Comptroller Dan Hynes says he can't begin writing those paychecks without a spending plan in place. That means the workers could end up missing a payday next week.
State aid checks to schools across Illinois are also in danger. They are supposed to go out on Friday.
The governor and lawmakers were supposed to have a budget in place by May 31.
