CHARITON, IOWA (AP) -- A judge has delayed a hearing in the case against a Chariton boy accused of killing his stepfather.

The hearing, which had been set for Monday in Lucas County, was to determine if the 13-year-old boy is tried as a youthful offender, which would make him eligible for rehabilitation or punishment when he becomes an adult.

The boy is charged in juvenile court with first-degree murder in the Feb. 10 shooting death of Todd Peak. He also faces charges for allegedly trying to kill his mother and a 5-year-old girl.

District Judge Monty Franklin was expected to issue an order on Tuesday to schedule dates for gathering information and hearing arguments on the issue.

The Associated Press doesn't name juveniles charged in a crime.
