TRI-STATES -- A Missouri Senate committee has sliced more than $500 million from Missouri's proposed budget for next year.
Among the biggest cuts the Senate Appropriations Committee made Thursday was eliminating the $37 million Career Ladder program, which helps pay teachers extra money for after-school tutoring.
These new cuts are in addition to the anticipated loss of four to six percent of Missouri school funding for the coming year.
Many school districts in our area offer this program to their teachers, picking up more than half of the extra money in salaries, not covered by the state. Many school districts we've talked to during this education funding crisis have told KHQA they won't be able to continue the after-school mentoring and tutoring without state dollars.
It will also mean pay cuts for teachers who depend on those funds.
Lawmakers must pass a final budget by May 7.
