Makes a smoother surface on new lanes

LAKENAN, MO. -- Further north MoDOT is working to give you a smoother ride.

As concrete is poured for the new lanes of US-36 an operation called diamond grinding is used to make it smoother.

Crews were working on the section of road between Hunnewell and Shelbina Friday, April 8th.

Diamond grinding has been around for about ten years, but is now becoming more common on new construction.

It is used to get the entire roadway to a certain plane and slope.

Grinding away a layer of cement with this process not only has benefits for drivers but taxpayers as well.

"For motorists it's just a great ride, it's just very smooth. And for taxpayers it's a great savings because the smoother we can get roads the longer they'll last," said Jackie Bordeleau, MoDOT Senior Construction Inspector.

All lanes of US-36 are expected to open in July
