Hundreds of volunteers pitch in to clean up Keokuk
KEOKUK, IA. -- Saturday, April 10th was the day for some heavy duty spring cleaning in Keokuk.
It was all part of the third annual Earth Day Clean Up.
More than 480 volunteers donated their time to pick up trash and litter all around the city.
Volunteers picked up more than four tons of trash and nearly a truck full of recycling materials.
Katie O'Brien with the Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce says these clean up days help the city in several ways for years to come.
"One it matters how your community looks to prospects and families considering moving to your area. And two, it's also educational, we're talking about educating our children about the impact of how the community looks and not to litter," said O'Brien.
Katie O'Brien says this year was quite different than the past two years.
The first year only about 100 people showed up and last year volunteers were picking up trash in the snow!
