SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- State officials have recognized 13 Illinoisans with the Governor's Volunteer Service Award.
According to organizers, the awards honor volunteers who have made a difference.
Gov. Pat Quinn's chief of staff, Jerry Stermer, says thousands of volunteers across the state donate time and talent to build stronger communities.
The awards focus on five areas: economic opportunity, education, environmental conservation, health and veterans' affairs.
The winners include Dale Fowler of Harrisburg who was nominated for starting a "Coats for Kids" program.
The awards were presented Monday.
