No money left in city budget to tear down
HANNIBAL, MO. -- There are four buildings in Hannibal that need to be torn down, but there is no money to do it.
The former church at 6th and Lyon Streets is the largest building on that list.
Bricks are falling off one corner while shingles have started falling off another.
But Hannibal Building Code Official Joey Burnham says the city already exhausted its demolition budget when it spent $43,000 to tear down a building on Broadway.
That leaves the city with its hands tied.
"If they're not falling down than we can board them up and let them sit there for a while. Hopefully someone will either buy them or the owner will do something with them. But really the ones we are really concerned with are the ones that actually have collapsed partially or completely in places," said Burnham.
Unless some an emergency situation occurs, the buildings will have to sit until next budget year.
Burnham says the city council is working on an ordinance that will get owners more involved with their properties and avoid buildings getting to the point where they need to be torn down.
