--Update Tuesday, April 15, 2010--

KHQA got many reports from our viewers who saw what they describe as a ball of fire falling from the sky Wednesday night.

Many folks were concerned it was a plane crash.  We have learned that what everyone saw was actually a meteor which passed through the atmosphere over the Midwest Wednesday night.

An Iowa Sheriff's Department dash cam caught the meteor in all of its glory last night.

The National Weather Service says the bright meteor may be related to a weak ongoing meteor shower called the Gamma Virginids.

That meteor shower began April 4, and is expected to be visible through April 21.

Wednesday and Thursday night were its so-called peak nights.

Unless the clouds get in the way, you may be able to spot some more like it tonight.

The National Meteor Society would like to hear from you if you saw the fireball.

--Original Story--

If you live in Marion and Ralls counties you may have seen what many have called a large fireball blazing through the sky Wednesday night after 10pm.

Here at the station we received several e-mails from viewers who said they saw what appeared to be an object that had a long yellow tail and orange flames fall out of the sky.

KHQA contacted The Missouri Highway Patrol who said that  that the National Weather Service reported to them  that it was a meteor show that they had been tracking for some time.

We attempted to contact the National Weather Service to confirm that report but an automated message said all the lines were busy.

We continue to follow and bring you more details as they become available.
