JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri senators have decided to ease the budget pain for state colleges and universities in order to keep a tuition freeze intact.
Gov. Jay Nixon and higher education leaders had reached a deal to keep tuition flat in exchange for not cutting the universities' budgets by more than $50 million next year.
But the Senate Appropriations Committee last week cut an extra $14.8 million, putting the tuition freeze in jeopardy.
On Wednesday, senators criticized Nixon and the schools for making the deal -- but they went along with it anyway, voting to reverse the additional $14.8 million cut.
