Both parts of the belt must be on to be in compliance with the law
Wearing your seatbelt is a serious thing in the state of Missouri.
CANTON, MO. --
And that includes Lewis County where the sheriff's department ran a special "Click it or Ticket" enforcement Thursday morning.
Deputies traveled around the county watching for people who were not in compliance with the law.
Deputy Doug Mullenix says that something as simple as putting on your seatbelt, could save your family a lot of unnecessary grief.
The deputy says one of the hardest things that law enforcement has to do is explain to a family that their loved one died unnecessarily because they were not wearing a seatbelt.
Deputy Mullenix reminds drivers that the hip belt prevents you from moving forward in an accident.
The shoulder belt prevents you from moving sideways toward the window.
To be in compliance with the law you must have both belts on at all times.
Drivers who just wear the hip belt and pull the shoulder belt behind them can be ticketed.
