The Missouri Department of Transportation is moving ahead with spring maintenance projects, after an expensive winter season.
MODOT's Northeast Missouri region spent roughly $3.3 million on supplies, fuel and manpower for snow removal this past winter. That's about the same as past years, but is still over-budget because of high salt and fuel costs.
That means with MODOT's budget year ending in June, crews are out performing as many low-cost maintenance projects as possible, in order to stay under budget for the year.
We caught up with one crew washing the winter salt off of Hannibal's bridge in order to keep the structure from rusting.
Officials say Northeast Missouri saw more snows this year, but lucked out with drier, more powdery snows than in other parts of the state.
Here are the numbers:
MODOT in Northeast Missouri used between 17 and 18 tons of salt on its roads and highways, spending around one million dollars on the salt alone.
194 thousand gallons of salt brine was used on highways, and crews worked 60 thousand hours to clear roads.
