CHICAGO -- A $1.4 million federal grant is headed to the Illinois Department of Insurance for its Senior Health Insurance Program.

The department announced the grant money on Thursday.

The money comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through its Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The state program provides free counseling and outreach for Medicare-eligible Illinoisans.

State officials say the Illinois senior program serves about 1.5 million people older than age 65 and about 240,000 disabled people under age 65.

Department director Michael McRaith says the program helps Illinoisans "navigate the often overwhelming process of Medicare enrollment."
