WATERLOO, IOWA (AP) -- The Black Hawk County recorder's office has changed procedures after a bag of money was apparently thrown away.

The deposit bag with $3,800 in cash and checks never made it to the bank. Recorder Judy McCarthy reported the missing bag to the sheriff's office and the Board of Supervisors this month.

McCarthy says she doesn't believe it was stolen, and none of the checks have cleared.

According to McCarthy, the deposit bags are kept in a vault in the treasurer's office. A deputy takes the bag to the bank. The missing bag was discovered when the office was reconciling bank statements on April 2.

McCarthy says her office is contacting those who wrote checks and has been able to recoup some of the money, but the cash is gone.
