EPA awards Illinois $2.6M for cleanup efforts

CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois communities are to receive $2.65 million in grants from the Environmental Protection Agency to clean contaminated waste sites in the state.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin announced the grant money on Wednesday.

The eight grants are to be used to assess, clean and redevelop contaminated waste sites.

Rock Island is to receive $500,000 to create a loan fund to provide grants for cleaning activities.

Both Vermilion County and Rockford are to receive $400,000 each for community-wide cleaning assessments and planning.

Rockford also is to receive $350,000 for cleaning of a rail yard site.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is to receive $400,000 for a site in North Chicago.

Other Illinois communities receiving grant money include Franklin Park, Lena and Vandalia.
