QUINCY, ILL. -- It's a delectable treat with a Presidential flare. Perhaps that's why Sweet Memories owner Mary Prizy's 'Obama Cupcakes' made such a splash in folks' tummies and on Maine Street Wednesday.
What gave you guys the idea for "Obama Cupcakes?"
Mike Smith with Sweet Memories said, "It was a spontaneous thing, seriously. Mary and I wanted to do something to honor the day. She is a wizard and she came up with this Obama cupcake within a matter of minutes. I did a sign, set the sign outside and the rest is history! Cars started to stop."
In fact, once that sign went up outside, the little bakery sold out all seven dozen Obama cupcakes in less than an hour. Folks also purchased homemade suckers, in honor of both political parties all day. But that wasn't the only draw. A lifesize Obama cutout beckoned to almost 100 passersby, who ended up stopping by the store for a posed portrait with the presidential likeness.
What did the customers say?
Smith said, "They were curious and excited. We were excited to have them here. But that's really what happened. They were curious and they had a lot of fun with it."
The fun doesn't stop there...Sweet Memories already is in the Dogwood spirit with special edition treats and cotton candy for the parade.
Just a note, Sweet Memories celebrates its first anniversary in business Saturday in time for the Dogwood Parade.
