New proposal would give counties more control over thier budgets
HANNIBAL, MO. -- Falling revenues in the state of Missouri may lead to more budget freedom for counties.
Members of the Missouri House have already approved a measure that would allow counties to cut their budgets during the middle of the year.
Right now counties are only allowed to increase their budgets.
We asked Marion County Presiding Commissioner Lyndon Bode what he thought of the legislation.
Bode says, "It's something you look back and some of the state statutes are antiquated. And this was one that getting in the books, and looking at it, as a state association of county commissioners, it's a law that we felt needed to be updated and something that needed to be addressed."
If the legislation passes counties would not be allowed to target one specific agency.
All the necessary cuts would have to be spread out.
