Rathje wants to keep american jobs in the U.S.
KEOKUK, IOWA -- Steve Rathje is tired of seeing american jobs go overseas.
He's running as a republican candidate for the 2nd congressional district in Iowa.
That puts him up against Congressman Dave Loebsack.
Rathje, a businessman from Cedear Rapids Iowa, thinks that government is too big and the needs of the american people are not getting enough attention.
On saturday morning he made a stop at the River City Cafe in Keokuk.
He's made similar stops all over the district.
The one thing that he's heard the most from people is that they want their jobs back.
Rathje who's faced his own setbacks in life says it's a concern he can understand.
Rathje says, "I know what it's like to be on welfare. I know what it's like to be on food stamps. I know what it's like to stand in a line for cheese and bread and diapers for my family. But I also know what it's like to pick myself up by the bootstraps, get my tail to work and provide for my family. They want their jobs back and they want somebody with the ability to do that. I believe I am."
Steve Rathje is married with four children and 6 grandchildren.
He is the founder of two different businesses in Cedar Rapids specifically created to keep jobs here in the U.S.
