Ex-Dem candidates for governor run as independents

CHICAGO (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn says he isn't afraid of competition.

That was his reaction Sunday to the news that another candidate has joined the race for governor.

Chicago businessman William "Dock" Walls has already run for governor as a Democrat but withdrew from the primary.

Now he's back as an independent. Fellow former Democratic candidate Ed Scanlan is his running mate.

Quinn says he's been involved in competition for a long time.

The Democratic governor says he looks forward to a "a robust debate."

Walls says Scanlan, an Oak Park attorney, has pledged up to $1 million to their campaign.

Walls and Scanlan need to collect 25,000 signatures from registered voters by June 21 to get on the November ballot.

Walls says their goal is collect 100,000.
