QUINCY, ILL. -- For the past few days, some of our anchors have gone back to some of their first jobs.
Our final night for our Working for a Living segment has Landon Mitchell going back to where he first started...on the radio.
I didn't get my start with Y101 radio, but they were nice enough to let me come in and see if I could still do the job. I actually started at KGRS and KBUR in Burlington, Iowa when I was 16. For four years, I ran the evening-drive show on KGRS. In the 12 years since I began, a lot has changed in radio.
"Well, we got rid of records. There's no more records. I miss the records. I really do," says Dennis Oliver with Y101 radio.
Of course, we didn't have records in the late 90s either, we were actually mostly computerized...similar to how Y101 radio works. The challenge about radio is sitting in a room alone, and still being able to entertain all the listeners.
"You sit in front of a microphone and there's things to talk about all the time. Sometimes I am talking to myself, but when you give stuff away or if you say something you're not supposed to, the phones light up," says Oliver.
So before I jumped back behind the board, I asked Y101's Dennis Oliver for his advice.
"Be yourself. Have fun. That's the two main things we try to do. And try to remember what radio station you're on. And give me $100 and we're good," says Oliver.
