Special emphasis will be placed on night-time drivers
QUINCY, ILL. -- If you plan to travel via car this holiday weekend, listen up.
Authorities are out in full force, especially during the night-time hours, to keep area roads safe.
That could mean a ticket for you.
The Illinois State Police along with the Illinois Department of Transportation kicked off its click it or ticket campaign Tuesday night.
Captain Pat Staples told KHQA you can plan on several months of law enforcement efforts.
He said authorities will focus on nighttime patrols.
Officers will make sure motorists aren't drinking and driving; focus on seatbelt compliance and distracted driving violations.
Staples said there's a higher percentage of people who don't wear seatbelts at night, which is why officers want to ramp up efforts during that time.
"We are actually combining with the other agencies to work details," Staples said, "You're going to see a lot of officers out this weekend, Memorial Day weekend, and the next couple of months. But, the one thing I think law enforcement, that we encourage everybody is voluntary compliance. Again, everybody thinks we are out here to write as many tickets as we can. If we come out here, and we work our details, and we don't write any tickets I think every trooper is happy. Again, we just want to see everybody get home safely. It doesn't matter if we write tickets or not, it's nice to see no crashes and minimum amount of tickets because people are doing the right thing."
Last year, 30 people were killed on Illinois highways during the Memorial Day weekend holiday.
