KEOKUK, IA. -- Thursday, June 16th we told you about construction that will soon be taking place at Roquette in Keokuk.

The company will try to, as much as possible, use local contractors and buy supplies locally, which is something the Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce is trying to get more people to do.

It's called the 'Buy Local Keokuk, It matters' campaign and it began in May.

The campaign is meant to raise awareness to local consumers that they have a choice of where they spend their money, and the hope is they will start keeping their money in the Keokuk community.

"We want people to think and think about when they are ready to make a purchase, that you don't have to go to the internet or you don't have to go and drive 50 miles in order to buy something because it's available here and it's actually a really good thing for the community," said campaign committee member Aliza Goldan.

"It's very vital that the tax dollars be spent here. There are products and stories here in Keokuk that are unique and you can find the same things or even better products here in Keokuk than you can on the internet," said Keokuk Mayor Tom Marion.  Marion also told KHQA the city buys everything it possibly can from local businesses.

"We're really excited about the success we've been having, that's creating awareness for our community for the importance of buying local and the impact it has on everything, on our small businesses, for our city services, for our health care services and our schools," said Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce Ex. Dir. Katie O'Brien.

The campaign committee did some research and here's what they found.

For every $100 spent locally, $45 comes back around to the community.
