QUINCY, ILL. -- The Quincy City Council Monday night voted to table for one week a petition by the Zoning Board of Appeals.
It denied a request by Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ on South 9th Street to vary the face area of a proposed ground-mounted sign.
Church representatives appealed to alderman, asking them to consider ever-changing technology when they make their decision.
The Church wants a ground-mounted sign that is 57 square feet, more than 9 feet tall, that would be a continuously-illuminated electronic message board.
The current city ordinance reads that signs can be no more than 6 feet high and 32 square feet. Melissa Holden spoke before the Council regarding the Human Rights Commision's annual report.
She said an affirmative action plan for the city still needs to be formulated, and they were looking to see what other cities were doing.
